4. "Adventureland"
This film came out in April of 2009 and I liked it so much, I actually saw it twice in theaters. It pays homage to the 1980's in a way that does not mock that era, but makes me want to go back in time and live in it. It also harkens back to all the great 80's movies I watched when I was little. "Adventureland" takes place during the summer of 1987 and follows a recent college graduate (Jesse Eisenberg) who is forced to take a job at a local, crappy amusement park, a job that gives him the best summer of his life. This film is funny in a quick-witted sort of way. It also stars Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader. The music is also really good in this movie. The fantastic soundtrack includes David Bowie, The Cure, The Replacements and Lou Reed.
3. (500) Days of Summer
"(500) Days of Summer" is an off-beat romantic comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zoe Deschanel. I love this movie. It goes into totally uncharted territory when it comes to "love story" type films. It is a story about a woman, Summer, who does not believe in true love and a man, Tom, who truly does. Tom falls for Summer. Summer doesn't fall for Tom. It sounds depressing, but it is actually quite uplifting, sweet and funny. Another interesting part of this film is that the story is not in chronological format. This movie takes place in present day L.A., so the setting is beautiful. The wardrobe in this movie is great as is the music. The soundtrack features The Smiths, Regina Spektor, and Feist, among others. "(500) Days of Summer" had me contemplating love and relationships for a good week after I saw it and I think that is a good thing.
2. "The Hangover"
I have confession; I saw this movie three times in theaters this past summer. I think this movie is really hilarious and original. "The Hangover" is the perfect comedy, in my opinion. So much crazy stuff happens in this movie thatI am not going to bother summarizing it. The cast is incredible in this film. It just won the Golden Globe for best comedy/or musical of the year, as well. If you want to improve your overall wellbeing please do yourself a favor and rent it.
