The University of St. Francis' (USF) Prolife group sponsored four students and one administrator on a trip to Washington, D.C. to lead in the "March for Life" on January 21 and 22. Students Mary George, John McGreal, Margaret Motto, and Marco Reyes were accompanied by Aaron Krumreich, Assistant Director of Ministry. The group will participate in a Mass and a march from Constitution Avenue up to Congress. The Vigil Mass of Life takes place on the first day and is officiated by bishops, cardinals, and priests from all over the world. The March for Life occurs on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and is a peaceful march to protest against the Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion. Mary George, a USF sophomore attending the march commented, "I am excited to be a part of the first USF group to attend March for Life. I hope that students will continue to be able to go in the future."
The March of Life began in 1973 when grassroots prolife leaders were concerned that January 22 would pass without memorializing Roe v. Wade and without petitioning Congress for redress. The organization planned to take responsibility for the first march, but about 30 prolife supporters formed a committee and planned the first ever March for Life. On January 22, 1974, the first march was held on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol. There were approximately 20 thousand prolife Americans who rallied that day. Later that year, the March for Life became a non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian, official organization.
